Squid Jigs and Tataki Fishing

Squid Jigs and Tataki Fishing – The Best Lures for Squid and Cuttlefish

Welcome to our section dedicated to squid jigs (totanare) and the tataki fishing technique, essential tools for targeting squid and cuttlefish both from shore and by boat. These artificial lures are designed to mimic natural prey, increasing the chances of attracting cephalopods.

Squid Jigs: Features and Types

Squid jigs, also known as totanare, are specialized artificial lures designed for squid and cuttlefish fishing. They are available in different sizes, usually labeled 1.5, 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5, with the size selection depending on the average size of the target species.

Color Selection and Glow Effect

Choosing the right squid jig color is essential and depends on the water conditions:

  • Murky Water – Bright and fluorescent colors are recommended for high visibility.
  • Clear Water – Natural colors are preferred to closely resemble real prey.

Additionally, glow-in-the-dark squid jigs (UV-charged "glow" models) are particularly effective for deep-water and night fishing, as they emit a subtle glow that attracts squid from a distance.

Construction and Materials

High-quality squid jigs come with two stainless steel crowns, ensuring greater durability and better hook penetration. The material used in the jig construction varies, but stainless steel is the preferred choice for its resistance to corrosion and long-lasting performance.

Tataki Fishing Technique: A Quick Overview

Tataki fishing is a Japanese technique specifically designed for catching squid. It involves using specialized artificial lures called "oppai", which mimic small shrimp or baitfish.

The technique consists of:

  1. Setting up a main fishing line with an appropriate weight based on depth and current conditions.
  2. Attaching 3 to 5 oppai lures at regular intervals along the line.
  3. Lowering the rig into the water and using sharp vertical movements to animate the lures, triggering aggressive strikes from squid.
  4. Once hooked, squid are retrieved using a smooth lifting motion to prevent them from escaping.

This method is highly effective for squid fishing in both shallow and deep waters.
