Trolling and Drifting Rods

Active filters

Trolling is a technique practiced at sea using a boat to tow bait, both artificial and live. It is divided into two main categories :

  • Coastal trolling : This technique is practiced near the coast to catch species such as sea bass, saddled bream, horse mackerel, and mackerel. The equipment used can range from handlines to bottom fishing rods with fixed-drum reels.

  • Deep-sea trolling (big game) : This takes place in the open sea and targets large pelagic fish such as albacore, spearfish, bluefin tuna, swordfish, little tunny, and dolphinfish. Equipment must be appropriate for the fishing power of the fish, with 20-30 lb rods for beginners and 50 lb rods or more for more experienced anglers.

Lures and trolling speed

  • Artificial lures : such as minnows and feathers, allow trolling at high speeds of up to 7 knots.

  • Live bait : such as garfish, mackerel, squid and horse mackerel, require a slower trolling speed, maximum 3 knots.

The most sought-after prey for this technique are undoubtedly amberjack and snapper, even trolling at depths of up to 80-100 meters. It's a challenging technique, but it can provide great satisfaction and impressive catches. It's practiced throughout Italy year-round.

  • Traditional or roller rings with anti-salt treatment : to guarantee resistance and durability even in adverse marine conditions.

Recommended book classes

  • Coastal trolling : rods with a draw weight between 2 and 30 pounds.

  • Offshore trolling : rods with a draw weight between 30 and 50 pounds.

Big game or drifting

Big game or drifting is a technique performed with live bait or sardines baited with large hooks, primarily targeting tuna. The rods used can be stand-up or "chair" rods, the latter being a few centimeters longer than stand-up rods. They feature roller guides or semi-precious stone guides with an aluminum screw-on plate and a gimbal on the butt for insertion into the fighting belt or the dedicated cup of the fighting chair.

Tips for choosing a trolling rod

  • Materials : prefer rods made of materials resistant to salt and wear, such as carbon fiber or advanced composites.

  • Length : Choose the rod length based on your specific technique and fishing needs.

  • Action : consider the action of the rod (fast, medium, slow) in relation to the type of prey and the baits used.
